our story
All Forward Outdoors is a small, locally owned development group born from a love of Western North Carolina’s natural landscapes and unique mountain culture. Guided by a deep sense of place and the principles of heirloom design, we create homes, structures, and spaces meant to belong—within their communities and across generations. We blend Scandinavian simplicity, Appalachian warmth, and Japanese mindfulness to craft spaces with clean lines, natural character, and a quiet sense of calm. These spaces are designed not to just impress for a moment, but to support daily life, reflection, and genuine connection.

COMMERCIAL
Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins is a hospitality project that emerged from Asheville’s deep connection to the outdoors. Sixteen A-frame cabins and a two-story River Lodge are thoughtfully nestled along the French Broad River Corridor, placing guests at the center of the region’s most accessible outdoor recreation.
RESIDENTIAL
The Haywood Road Rowhouse Community reimagines urban living through thoughtful infill development. Eighteen single-family rowhomes clustered on an acre create density without sacrificing livability—connecting residents by foot and bike to Haywood Road, the River Arts District, the French Broad River Greenway, and Downtown Asheville.
our community
Everything we do starts with supporting the community we love.
AFO is rooted in the community where we live and work. We create projects that add lasting value to the places they call home—supporting local nonprofit partners, showing up for our neighbors, and committing to ongoing stewardship through thoughtful leadership and responsibility.
Community Partners
THE CREW
Longtime friends Joe Balcken and Shelton Steele took a midlife leap together—choosing curiosity over comfort—to co-found AFO and bring their first project, Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins, to life.
Their partnership is defined by a fox-and-otter approach: vision and play, strategy and instinct. Together, they bring design, construction, and operational expertise to every project with a shared commitment to creating places that succeed over the long term—for the people who use them, the owners who steward them, and the communities they call home.
Together, they bring design, construction, and operational expertise to create places that endure for the people, owners, and communities they serve.
